TWISTER X DOLLAR LITTER APRIL 2012

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!  TWISTER AND DOLLAR ARE THE PROUD PARENTS OF 8 PUPPIES, BORN APRIL 2ND, 2012.   LABOR STARTED IN ERNEST AT 3:20PM AND THE FIRST PUP, A BLACK FEMALE, WAS BORN @ 3:30PM.  SHE WAS FOLLOWED BY A PLETHORA OF BROTHERS- 5 IN ALL- YELLOW, BLACK, BLACK, YELLOW, YELLOW, THEN TWO SISTERS- BLACK, THEN FINALLY THAT YELLOW THAT THE DOLAN FAMILY WAS HOPING FOR! SAVING THE BEST FOR LAST I GUESS!  WE DIDN’T GET THE FOX REDS THAT A COUPLE OF PEOPLE WERE HOPING FOR, ALL OF THE YELLOWS ARE A DARK BUTTERSCOTCH-THEY WILL BE THE SAME COLOR AS OUR DOG “MOLLY” WHEN THEIR PERMANENT COATS COME IN.  BUT, THE IMPORTANT THING IS THAT ALL WERE HEALTHY- THEY ALL ARE WITHIN 1 1/2 OZS. OF WEIGHT/SIZE OF EACH OTHER- AND TWISTER BEING A VERY ATTENTIVE MOTHER.  WE WILL BE UPDATING PHOTOS AND MILESTONES OF THE PUPS WEEKLY FOR THE FIRST THREE WEEKS, MORE OFTEN FOR THE LAST FIVE SINCE THIS IS WHEN THE PUPS GET “FUN”.

PICTURES ARE PRETTY INDICATIVE OF THE YELLOWS’ TRUE COLOR-CLICK ON THUMBNAILS FOR FULL SIZE

4/10/12-  The pups have all doubled in size and weight, they are all still even in their rates of growth so there are no “big” or “small” pups in this litter, which a uniform litter is what breeders strive for.  So far the pups have had their dew claws removed and were all checked out by our vet, and they all have their I.D collars on now.  At this time, I would caution future puppy owners from picking a puppy based on photos alone or by some arbitrary visual trait.  That “cute” puppy that is so photogenic may be the “nightmare” puppy for a family with young kids, so before you get your heart set on a certain pup, please keep in mind that temperament should be the deciding factor when picking a puppy.

Of course right now, all they are doing is eating, sleeping, eating, pooping, and more eating.  As the photos show, they are fatter around then they are tall. Which is why they can’t walk upright yet!  The pigment on the yellows is coming in nice and dark, it will continue to darken for the next week or so.  All have the correct black pigment on their noses, lips, and toes.  Eyes should be opening in time for the next round of photos and the pups will be getting more active soon as well.

04/17/12 – Individual photo session took place today, as you can see from the pictures, the pups are getting their eyes open and are able to hold their heads up better (no more bobble-heads).  They are also getting up on all fours and trying their best to walk.  As they get stronger and as the week progresses, they will be on their feet for longer periods.  From here on, the pups will be changing more.  They will be getting a lot more mobile, they will be cutting teeth and will start chewing on each other and play fighting, etc.. They will also start taking an interest in things outside the whelping pool, meaning that they will try to escape.  I for one, am going to enjoy this last week or so of relative quiet.  The photos next week will be more natural, and most likely we will be getting the pups outside, depending on the weather.

04/25/12- Here’s some updated pictures of the pups.  They have been outside for most of the day, both yesterday and today, and they definitely like the grass better then the wood deck (better traction).  A lot less whining! They are getting around pretty good now, a couple have made it accidentally out of the pool, mainly by climbing on top of siblings to reach mom on the outside and falling out.  We will continue taking them outside for long periods as long as the weather cooperates, which makes my clean up duties easier.  We will also be starting them on mushy food this coming weekend since they are teething and chewing on each other.  Right now, personalities are just starting to form,  they are all in that “needy” stage right now and like to climb into laps or lay against you, so picture taking can be a little difficult.  They will start getting bolder next week and beyond.  Some of the pups have “nick names” either given by me or by my eight year old son who thinks that he has to name them all.  Two of the yellows have interesting “mis-marks” of rust colored hair like birthmarks- The yellow female “Smut” has hers near her right armpit/shoulder,  and the Orange collared yellow male “Smudge” is marked in a streak on his neck/head.  These marks will most likely fade or shed out/blend in when adult coat comes in.

5/03/12- The pups were introduced to toys this last week, they have been carrying them around and playing tug a war with each other, as well as getting in some really good gum tissue massage for those emerging “shark” teeth.  They have gotten bolder and today did some exploring in the bushes and they got to meet their first duck.  They didn’t quite know what to think of it, they weren’t sure if it was to be considered “food” or a rather quiet “buddy”.  They all got in a good sniff and a couple of licks,  some of the pups walked away rather disgusted that it wouldn’t get up and play, even when barked at.  Out of 227 photos, I narrowed the field to 149.  Then I realized that there was no way to post that many photos so I had to narrow it down to the choices below.  Next week, look for page 2, since this one is rather full.

PINK COLLAR BLACK FEMALE “DOC”- THIS IS A VERY BOLD PUP WHO HAS NO PROBLEM BEING INDEPENDENT WHEN SHE WANTS TO GO EXPLORING

ORANGE COLLAR YELLOW MALE “SMUDGE”-  THIS PUP LOVES TO PLAY, CHEW, AND WRESTLE. LIGHTER IN WEIGHT BUT STILL THE SAME SIZE AS THE REST.

WHITE COLLAR BLACK MALE “BOOTH”- THIS PUP IS A LOVER AND CAN BE INDEPENDENT AS WELL. LIKES TO EXPLORE BUT ALSO CLIMB IN YOUR LAP. HEAVIER BUILT PUP.

BLUE/NO COLLAR YELLOW MALE “BONES”- THE HEAVIEST OF THE YELLOWS, THIS PUP PLAYS HARD AND THEN SLEEPS HARD. HE LOST HIS COLLAR WHILE WRESTLING AND I AM OUT OF BLUE ONES, SO FROM NOW ON HE WILL EITHR GO “NAKED” OR I WILL GIVE HIM A WHITE COLLAR.

YELLOW COLLAR BLACK MALE “BEAR”- THIS PUP IS AN EXPLORER AND WITH HIS HEAVY COAT, LOVES TO BE PETTED AS WELL.  HE ALSO HAS AN OFF/ON SWITCH: HE PLAYS UNTIL HE DROPS.

PINK COLLAR YELLOW FEMALE “SMUT”- THIS LITTLE GIRL LIKES TO PLAY, BUT REALLY LIKES TO CLIMB IN YOUR LAP AND BE WITH YOU.  SHE IS GOING TO BE LIGHTER IN WEIGHT, BUT SHE’S A SCRAPPER.

GREEN COLLAR BLACK FEMALE “SAM”- THIS FEMALE IS STOCKY AND HEAVY.  GOOD LOOKING TOO! BOLD PUP, SHE LIKES TO EXPLORE AND WHEN SHE GETS STUCK, SHE FIGURES OUT HOW TO GET OUT ON HER OWN.

GREEN COLLAR YELLOW MALE “DUKE”- THIS GUY IS ONERY! IF THERE IS A WRESTLING MATCH GOING ON, HE EITHER STARTS IT OR JOINS IN.  VERY SURE OF HIMSELF. LIGHTER WEIGHT PUP.
